What is an Honorary Degree?

An honorary degree is a special academic distinction granted by a university or similar institution, where the typical requirements for a degree are waived. It’s usually bestowed as a mark of respect for someone’s exceptional achievements in a particular field or for their contributions to society at large. Sometimes, honorary degrees are given to notable individuals who speak at graduation ceremonies. However, it’s important to note that these degrees don’t hold the same weight with employers as earned doctoral degrees and shouldn’t be misrepresented as such.

At NC State, honorary degrees serve as the highest form of recognition for individuals who have made extraordinary and notable contributions to academia, creativity, leadership, and public service. These individuals serve as role models at the state, national, or international level, embodying the university’s overarching mission.

How are recipients selected?

The Faculty Committee on Honorary Degrees at CGU is seeking nominations for individuals deserving of the Honorary Doctoral Degree. This prestigious recognition is reserved for those whose accomplishments are truly exceptional and leave a lasting mark. Recipients, whether affiliated with the university or not, are chosen based on their outstanding contributions to scholarship, creativity, leadership, humanitarian or public service.

It’s important to note that honorary degrees won’t be conferred upon university faculty, staff, Board of Trustees members, the Central Global University Board of Governors, the governor, or any elected official or state employee with authority over CGU, as long as that relationship persists. Additionally, self-nominations are not accepted by the committee.

Nominations that receive the backing of the Faculty Committee on Honorary Degrees, as well as the endorsement of the provost and chancellor, will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval. The board reviews recommended nominations from the faculty committee each semester.
